Date back to sixteenth century, the legend says that in ancient days the area had jungles. One day a lady farmer went to the jungles to collect fodder. When she was sharpening her sickle on a nearby granite stone, blood oozed out from it. Seeing the rare phenomenon, she immediately reported the matter to all concerned. They conducted a Prasna and it was revealed that the sila which bleeded possessed powers of Goddess Vana-Durga. Accordingly a temple was built for the swaymbhoo vigraha under the direct supervision of karnavars of five Nair taravds viz. Mannil, Vazhenkhat. Mullath, Muttambarath and Anthoor.
